Shopping in Luxembourg

Shopping in Luxembourg is a pleasant experience. From the most modern outlets offering the best of the fashion brands to the small, hidden shops, Luxembourg has much to offer to the fans of shopping.

Luxembourg-Ville is filled with souvenir shops selling attractive handcrafted items, clocks, pottery and miscellaneous objects. Paintings by artists from the Grand Duchy, in addition to the rest of Europe, are also featured at many fine galleries in the city. Porcelain plates, decorated with painted landscapes of the Grand Duchy and cast-iron wall plaques produced by Fonderie de Mersch, depicting castles, coats of arms, and local scenes, are excellent mementos of a Luxembourg visit. The best place to find all these items is in the streets leading off of Place d'Armes.

For a comprehensive guide to shopping in Luxembourg-Ville and around the Grand Duchy, pick up Les Rues de la Mode et du Shopping au Luxembourg, a glossy publication available from bookshops and some news stands.

Luxembourg-Ville is divided into two shopping centres: the Oberstadt and the Unterstadt (the area around the Central Station).

First visit the Unterstadt with its main streets, the Avenue de la Gare, starting at the Central Station in the direction of the Viaduc and Oberstadt. In this area you will find many fashion boutiques, jewellers, electronic and photography shops.

Right towards Rue Philippe II, which crosses the Rue Notre Dame and a little further, is the pedestrian sector connecting with Rue Louvigny, Rue Monterey, Rue de la Poste and the Grand-Rue, which is among the most important shopping street in Luxembourg. Many of Europe's leading designers have their boutiques in this area along with some very good art galleries. In the station area, Avenue de la Gare, which joins the Passerelle (bridge) to the new city, is lined with shops, most with the moderate price range.

The Oberstadt offers a vast choice of exclusive fashion boutiques, leather goods and shoes of international label. The Grand-Rue is a paradise for lovers of precious jewellery and watches. Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels to mention just a few. Gallery Grand-Rue/Beaumont, is another interesting shop to visit, to purchase fashion, jewellery and perfumes. MCM, is located just outside as you leave the Gallery, famous for leather and fashion articles.
